A twelve-pound terrier mix paces the kitchen at 4 p.m., three hours after breakfast, staring at the pantry door. Her owner reads this as hunger and adds a scoop of kibble. By day 10 of this pattern, the dog has gained roughly a pound and a half, and the pacing hasn’t stopped — it just now starts earlier. That’s the scene worth sitting with, because it’s the one most owners recognize, and it’s also the one that most often gets solved the wrong way.
I think about this the way I think about a dog with an ambiguous gait abnormality: you don’t treat the first thing you see, you look for what’s actually driving the presentation. Hunger and boredom produce nearly identical behavior — hovering near the food bowl, whining, nudging a hand, staring — but they come from different systems entirely. One is metabolic. The other is behavioral. What “hungry” actually means physiologically
True hunger is a hormonal conversation between the gut and the hypothalamus. What boredom looks like when it’s wearing hunger’s clothes
Boredom-driven “hunger” behavior tends to cluster around transitions — the owner walking toward the kitchen, a bag rustling, the dog waking from a nap with nothing scheduled next. It’s situational, not physiological. A dog that mobs the food bowl the instant a laptop closes, but ignores it twenty minutes later when nothing interesting is happening, is telling you something about attention, not metabolism.
Here’s where I’ve watched a reasonable-sounding fix fail. A colleague once managed a 6-year-old Labrador’s “constant hunger” by switching to a lower-calorie kibble and free-feeding it throughout the day, assuming more access would settle the dog down. Her weight was stable at 19 pounds, she wasn’t underfed, and enrichment toys hadn’t touched it.
