History: These dogs worked for the Inuit tribe known as the Mahlemut. The Alaskan Malamutes were never kept as pampered pets, and would work by pulling heavy loads on sleds. They maybe weren’t as fast as the Siberian Husky, but are said to be the most powerful sled dogs. They were mainly used for strength, not speed. Alaskan Malamutes would also hunt large game, such as seals or even polar bears. The Malamute was the ideal working dog. The dogs popularity increased when the Gold rush started in 1896 and were chosen as sled dogs.
Temperament: The Alaskan Malamute is a strong willed breed, and is also a fun companion- if given frequent excercise. Because of their size and strenght, they should not be left alone with young children. Malamutes require lots of time outdoors, if not given excersice, they become bored, frusterated and destructive. Alaskan Malamutes make poor guard dogs.
